A 16-year-old girl lost her life following a hit-and-run accident that occurred around 21:20 hrs Tuesday, on the Number 22, Bel Air Public Road.
The victim has been identified as Kimberley Jones, of Lot 63 Number 22, Bel Air, West Coast Berbice.
According to Police, the incident involved motor car PAF 2130, which was reportedly being driven by 32-year-old Paul Mahabal, a resident of Montrose, East Coast Demerara.
Initial investigations indicate that Mahabal’s vehicle was heading west along the southern side of the roadway when it struck Jones as she was crossing from north to south. The right front side of the car made contact with the teenager, causing her to sustain serious injuries.
Rather than stopping to render assistance, the driver reportedly continued westward, leaving the injured girl at the scene.
Public-spirited citizens responded swiftly, rushing the unconscious teen to Fort Wellington Public Hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead by the attending medical staff.
Acting on information, Police at Mahaicony intercepted the suspect vehicle and took the driver into custody. He was subsequently handed over to Fort Wellington Police Station, where he is currently assisting with ongoing enquiries.
The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run is continuing.
