The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Santos football clubs secured contrasting victories as the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) National Training Centre hosted a doubleheader in the Women’s Division One League.
Following a week-long break, the league resumed with a comprehensive victory for the GDF, who cruised to a dominant 24-0 win over Den Amstel.
Niomie Williams opened the scoring for the GDF with a powerful strike from outside the box after just seven minutes, setting the tone for what would become a goal-fest.
Sandra Johnson and Glendy Lewis led the first-half onslaught, scoring multiple times to establish a commanding lead.
The flow of goals continued unabated in the second half with Aaliyna Christie, Jalade Trim, Nikita Wayne, and Shenesa Cornelius all adding their names to the scoresheet.
In the day’s second fixture, a more tightly contested affair saw Santos earn their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Western Tigers.
Aleena Baptiste scored the crucial breakthrough goal in the 11th minute, expertly finding the corner of the net to put Santos ahead.
The team’s solid defence held firm, maintaining the clean sheet until captain Tyneshia Thorne sealed the victory in the 59th minute.
The Women’s Division One League continues Friday, August 29, with another doubleheader at the same venue.
Den Amstel will face Ann’s Grove FC at 18:00hrs before Western Tigers take on Fruta Conquerors FC at 19:30hrs.
