PPP increases Parliamentary majority from 1 to 7 seats in landslide victory – Bharrat Jagdeo

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) will take control of the National Assembly with a far greater majority, with the party’s general secretary, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, telling the News Room that he was happy securing a landslide victory as predicted, increasing the parliamentary majority from one seat to seven seats.

The results mean that the combined opposition will have 29 seats in the National Assembly, giving the PPP/C a seven-seat advantage in the 65-seat National Assembly.

In the last National Assembly, the PPP/C only had a one-seat majority, and its aim in these elections was to solidify its position and win a greater number of seats, which it has now managed to do.

The seat allocation in the Parliament has been determined following the declaration of results in all 10 districts and a recount of some areas in Regions Four and Five. An official declaration of the results is expected to be made at 11 pm on Saturday.

The results show the PPP/C with 46,000 more votes than the five other parties which contested Monday’s general and regional elections.
