Suspect injured while attempting to flee robbery scene

Police in Regional Division No. 3 are probing an alleged armed robbery committed on Saturday against 40-year-old businessman Teyon McPhoy of Zeelugt North, East Bank Essequibo.

The incident reportedly occurred around 13:40 hrs at McPhoy’s residence, where he operates a Superbet outlet.

Police Headquarters reported that earlier on Saturday, at around 12:00 hrs, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Deol Narayan of No. 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice — visited the outlet and placed several bets, all of which he lost. He later began crediting bets From McPhoy amounting to approximately $140,000.

Sometime after, Narayan requested to use the washroom and was escorted to the back of the premises. A few minutes later, he allegedly confronted McPhoy with a handgun and demanded money. Narayan reportedly managed to take a quantity of $5,000 notes from a nearby wooden box.

Police said a scuffle ensued and the suspect attempted to flee during which the handgun fell to the ground.

Narayan then ran out of the shop and entered a motorcar in an attempt to escape. McPhoy, who had picked up the fallen firearm, allegedly discharged about three rounds at the fleeing vehicle.

The getaway attempt ended when Narayan crashed into a heap of sand a short distance away. McPhoy followed and opened the driver’s door and discovered the suspect bleeding from a head injury.

Police were summoned and upon arrival, McPhoy handed over a .32 pistol. Both the suspect and victim were taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where Narayan was treated and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a serious condition.

The scene was processed, and investigators recovered one suspected .32 spent shell, one warhead, and one live .32 round of ammunition.

McPhoy has since been placed in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
