President Dr Irfaan Ali met with the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of War, Joseph M. Humire, at State House on Monday, an engagement part of deepening collaboration between the two countries.
A release from the Office of the President noted that Guyana’s Head of State emphasised that the sovereignty and defence of Guyana are central priorities for his government. The discussion also reportedly focused on strengthening and expanding Guyana’s strategic partnership with the United States, with a shared commitment to peace and security across the region.
Later Monday, Dr. Ali told reporters that the two sides are “looking at areas we will expand the collaboration in.”
For him, the meeting signaled the government’s continued focus on engaging US authorities to strengthen local defence and security.
Humire was accompanied by his delegation and the United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot.
Guyana’s Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, National Security Advisor Captain Gerry Gouveia, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, and Head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency Colonel Sheldon Howell were also part of the meeting.
