A release from the Ministry of Home Affairs has noted that a total of five buildings were destroyed in a massive blaze that erupted along James Street, Albouystown, on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, about 30 people are said to be displaced.
As of Thursday evening, firefighters remain on the scene and are still working to soak the area to ensure the blaze is completely extinguished.
As a safety measure, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has disconnected power in the vicinity to allow emergency crews to operate without risk. The clearing of rubble from the affected section of the street is expected to commence shortly.
Meanwhile, it was also noted that the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has operationalised a shelter at the Six Head Lewis Gym to accommodate those displaced by the fire.
Accommodations for Thursday night, as well as personal effects, are being provided.

The News Room understands that an apartment building was also destroyed. The chaotic scene on Thursday afternoon saw many residents in tears and inconsolable as their homes and possessions were reduced to ashes.
One resident described the terrifying moment when the fire broke out. The man said he lived in the apartment building and was asleep when the fire started. He was awakened by neighbours banging on his door, alerting him to the fire.
Divisional Officer Otis Charles, in an update earlier, said the Guyana Fire Service received a call about the blaze and responded with six fire tenders.
