Motor car up grabs at lucrative One Guyana Unification Softball Cup

The inaugural One Guyana Unification Softball Cup was officially launched on Tuesday at the Ghandi Youth Organisation Ground, promising a more unified and lucrative tournament for players.

The four-day extravaganza, which runs from September 25-28, is a collaboration between the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc. and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and merges the previously separate President’s, Prime Minister’s, and Vice-President’s Cups.

Regal Stationery and Computer Centre is the event’s title sponsor. The prize money in four categories has significantly increased.

The top two teams in the Legends (Over-50), Masters (Over-40), and Open divisions will receive G$1 million and G$200,000, respectively.

The winner in the women’s category will take home G$400,000, with the second-place team earning G$100,000.

In addition to the team prizes, individual stakes are higher this year.

The Most Valuable Player in the Legends category will drive away with a Toyota Vitz, while the top performers in the Masters and Open categories will each receive a motorcycle.

The MVP of the women’s category will be awarded a three-piece living room set.

A total of 26 teams will be competing, including teams from the New York Softball Cricket League.

The tournament begins on Thursday with the women’s knockout category, while the men’s round-robin T20 phase will start on Friday.

Matches will be played at various venues in Georgetown and on the East Coast of Demerara before all four finals are played at the Georgetown Cricket Club on Sunday.

GSCL Inc. president Ian John spoke at the launch and expressed delight with the initiative. He anticipates “fierce but at the same time exciting cricket” and thanked all the teams and sponsors for their commitment.

Tournament Director and International Broadcaster John Ramsingh echoed similar sentiments, stating that the event will “showcase Guyana’s softball cricketers’ talent.”
