Breast cancer remains the most common cancer and leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Guyana, accounting for nearly 30% of cases diagnosed in 2023 and more than 17% of cancer deaths, according to the Cancer Institute of Guyana (CIG).
The Cancer Institute has made screenings more affordable this October, offering free mammograms and reduced-cost tests. The initiative includes wellness workshops, karaoke nights, picnics, zumba sessions, candlelight vigils, and the annual ‘Walk for Awareness’, all aimed at encouraging women to check their health early.
The Institute’s manager, Monett Harry on Tuesday said that while awareness has grown, women need to access screening early.
“Each diagnosis impacts not just the individual but also families and communities. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, reduces the aggressiveness of required therapy, and improves quality of life,” Harry said.
Cancer registry data shows that dozens of women continue to be treated each year—47 in 2020, 57 in 2021, 42 in 2022, 37 in 2023, 38 in 2024, and four so far in 2025.
Longstanding member, Dr. Syed Ghazi, stressed that accessibility is central to the fight against cancer.
“We don’t do this for one day or a march, or things like that. We do this year around, and we try to save lives, [and] create awareness. And that’s what is the importance,” he said.
He said since 2006, they’ve gone into all ten regions, doing thousands of pap smears and screenings.
A cancer survivor, Ms. Donna Cummings said early detection can save lives. She said she was initially misdiagnosed but she later discovered her illness was breast cancer and struggled to access urgent tests and treatment.
“It was not an easy path, but with my sons and a kind friend by my side, I made it through.
“Today, I am thankful to be alive, and I want to encourage others to get tested early. Early detection can save lives,” she said.
