Guyana Basketball Federation hailed as ‘model’ after landing Caribbean Award of Excellence

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) has been recognised for its “exceptional leadership and development work” after receiving the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC).

The honour was presented to GBF Vice Presidents Rawle Toney, Jermaine Slater, and General Secretary Patrick Haynes during the CBC Assembly held in Mexico City, Mexico.

CBC President, Leslie Collymore, was effusive in his praise, declaring Guyana a “model Federation within the CBC” for its consistent and high-impact commitment to the sport at both grassroots and elite levels.

Collymore highlighted that the GBF’s efforts have directly benefited the wider Caribbean region, not just the local game.

Key to the recognition was Guyana’s ability to host landmark regional events.

The nation was singled out as the first English-speaking Caribbean country to stage a FIBA 3×3 Quest event, showcasing its administrative capacity and forward-thinking approach to the fast-growing format.

Furthermore, Collymore noted the upcoming hosting of the FIBA Women’s Caribbean Championship, marking the tournament’s return to the region after several years—proof, he stated, that the GBF can “deliver at the highest level” when the region needs it most.

The GBF expressed deep gratitude for the international recognition, emphasising that the award belongs to everyone involved in the local basketball development.

“We are happy that the work done in Guyana is being recognized both regionally and internationally,” the Federation stated, adding that their growth initiatives had a positive knock-on effect throughout the CBC.

The GBF dedicated the accolade to its local affiliates and partners, especially acknowledging the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Olympic Association for their vital support.
