Young Rivals win T20 tournament in Suriname; Lusignan dethroned

Young Rivals of Fairfield, East Coast Demerara, emerged champions of a three-team T20 competition last weekend in Suriname, defeating fellow Guyanese side and 2024 champions Lusignan Sports Club in the final.

Spartans of Suriname was the other team in the tournament, which was held on October 11-12 at Dr Snellen Park.

Young Rivals started with a six-wicket defeat against Lusignan on the opening day, but rebounded well on the last day, beating Spartans by eight runs before winning the final by three wickets.

On the opening day Lusignan managed a clean slate, defeating Young Rivals by six wickets and Spartans by three wickets.

Young Rivals’ title success was led by the batting effort of Kevin Kisten, who had scores of 45, 48 and 28, while Yeudistir Persaud made 50 in the opening game and had a brilliant all-round effort in the final, taking 2-19 and making 42.

Rajendra Singh was also among the runs with 45 against Spartans, while Tyrell Peters was the standout bowler for Young Rivals with splendid figures of 2-15, 2-21 and 3-33. Mahendra Singh (4-9) and Vijai Kalpu (4-19) copped four-wicket hauls for the new champions.

For Lusignan, Nigel Deodat was consistent throughout with scores of 30, 26 and 38, while Gavin Singh highlighted Spartans’ winless campaign with 57, the highest individual score of the two-day tournament.

GAME ONE: Lusignan defeated Young Rivals by six wickets
