In a significant move to deepen hemispheric sports cooperation, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) and the Paraguay Olympic Committee (COP) have formalised a historic partnership, establishing a unified five-year framework for athletic development across the Caribbean.
This regional agreement, signed during CANOC’s 23rd Annual General Assembly in Guyana, commits both organizations to advancing sport governance, infrastructure, and athlete capacity building throughout the CANOC membership.
CANOC President Keith Joseph and COP President Camilo Pérez López Moreira cemented the partnership.
“This partnership represents more than an agreement; it’s a bridge connecting South America and the Caribbean through the universal language of sport, education, and shared prosperity,” declared Mr. Joseph. “Together, we are fortifying our collective capacity to advance athletic governance, cultivate leadership, and accelerate development across the Americas.”
It builds on an agreement the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and COP, effected in March 2025.
This alliance is designed to serve as a model for the wider Caribbean collaboration, delivering immediate, high-impact results for athletes.
The GOA-COP MOU establishes a robust framework across high-performance sports, technical expertise sharing, and human resource development, focusing on concrete initiatives:
- Athlete Development: Providing Guyanese athletes, from cadet to senior levels, with training opportunities, scholarships, and exposure to Paraguay’s high-performance centres for programs ranging from one to six months, and up to two-year specialised programs.
- Coaching & Technical Expertise: Offering specialized training and education to Guyanese coaches alongside top-tier professionals in Paraguay.
- Infrastructure & Equipment: Exploring funding and support for a National High-Performance Training Facility in Guyana, and providing sports equipment grants for mass participation and talent identification across the nation’s regions.
- Reverse Collaboration: Guyana will take a leading role in developing Cricket in Paraguay through technical guidance and coaching expertise.
