Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony on Wednesday launched the ‘Colourful Cooking for Healthy Living’ recipe book with emphasis on nutritional meals.
During his remarks at the launch held at the Umana Yana, at Kingston, Georgetown, Dr. Anthony said a healthy diet is essential for preventing chronic diseases.
“If you want to stay healthy then one of the things you have to start thinking about is what you eat. You can change the diets in your home – and if we start doing that, we can prevent a lot of chronic diseases from happening,” the Health Minister said.

He emphasised the importance of prevention, noting that a long and healthy life starts with focus on diet and exercise.
“We have to start with the simple, daily things that we do. We have to start eating appropriately. We are hoping that we can get people to think about what they eat and drink,” he said.
This free recipe book is available for public knowledge and encourages healthy lifestyles. It was developed by the ministry with partners who have background in dietary and nutritional food preparation. It holds recipes that persons can make with vegetables, fruits and other ingredients found locally.

A notable issue the book aims to resolve is portion sizes as this can lead to over eating. The recipe book provides measurements allocated for persons to track their calorie intake among other healthy eating procedures.
Importantly, the Health Minister urged persons to reduce their sugar intake, avoid ultra-processed foods and drink more water.
“It’s probably more convenient for us to buy things on the shelf but when we actually examine them, these things are a lot of chemicals that are harmful to your body,” the minister said.
