Lennox George Benjamin, a 69-year-old resident of Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, died on Thursday afternoon after he was crushed by a truck near the intersection of Lamaha Street and Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.
Police Headquarters said the accident involved motor lorry # GAH 5884 driven by a 33-year-old male of Long Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and Benjamin, a cyclist.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the motor lorry was stationary on Lamaha Street facing west due to a red traffic signal, while the pedal cyclist was proceeding west along Lamaha Street on the left side of the lorry.
Police reported that when the traffic signal changed to green, the driver of the lorry continued west into the intersection before making a turn south onto Vlissengen Road, during which a collision occurred. The left rear portion of the lorry hit the cyclist, who fell onto the road surface, sustaining injuries to his body.
Emergency medical personnel responded, and Benjamin was examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead. The body was then taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examination.
The driver of the lorry is in custody. Investigations are ongoing.
