‘Every applicant will get a house lot’ – President in push to close Region Six’s housing gap

The Government is moving to dramatically expand home ownership, with President Irfaan Ali announcing sweeping plans to deliver house lots to every eligible applicant in Region Six within the next five years.

Addressing hundreds of residents gathered at the Classic Tarmac in Corriverton on Friday, President Ali said the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) is scaling up investment to unlock new housing opportunities across the region.

“In this five years, we want to bring the demand and supply to zero. That is, we must deliver house lots to every single person who have an application in the system,” the President declared, drawing loud applause from residents excited about the long-awaited relief.

President Ali detailed active land development in Moleson Creek and Palmyra, where new infrastructure—including a four-lane highway and a critical farm-to-market access road—is taking shape. These projects, he said, are designed not only to open new housing areas but also to connect communities and stimulate economic activity across Berbice.

On land regularisation, the President acknowledged that several schemes in Region Six remain tangled in boundary disputes and unresolved ownership issues. To fix this, a specialised mechanism is being established in partnership with the Attorney General’s Chambers.

“We are going to… hire independent lawyers to expedite the land regularisation process in Region Six so that we can move to the titling and transporting of those lands,” he assured residents.

Turning to the region’s agricultural and commercial future, President Ali noted that thousands of acres will soon be made available as the government partners with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Public Works. The goal: develop new plots, build access roads, and strengthen farm-to-market links to support both housing expansion and food production.

“We are going to create infrastructure in the hub—create 10-acre plots to start with—so that all of the new applicants, we can find ways in which we can support them,” he said, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive growth.

For families across Region Six, the announcement signals not just new housing developments, but a future anchored in opportunity, stability, and long-awaited ownership.
