Driver arrested after Police seize large ganja haul and 50 rounds of ammo

Police in Regional Division Seven have launched an investigation after a significant quantity of suspected cannabis and a box of ammunition were discovered during an early-morning operation at the 70 KM Police Checkpoint, Cuyuni, on Saturday, 22 November 2025.

According to Police Headquarters, the incident occurred at about 06:10 hrs when ranks on duty intercepted a motor lorry, GYY 2105, after the driver reportedly attempted to bypass the checkpoint.

The 48-year-old truck driver, of Carmichael Street, Georgetown, was the lone occupant of the vehicle. He was escorted to the checkpoint outpost, where police conducted a search of both his person and the lorry in his presence.

During the search, officers discovered six bulky parcels inside two travelling bags, each containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. A further search of the vehicle uncovered a box with 50 live rounds of suspected 9mm Luger ammunition.

The suspected drugs and ammunition were processed and lodged as evidence. The driver was subsequently arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
