A mother in Berbice is calling for justice after her 9-year-old son died ten days following an alleged assault by his cousin.
Loretta Collins told the News Room that on November 12, her son, Loven Collins, rode his bicycle to visit his aunt in Kildonan Village, not far from their home. As he approached his aunt’s house, Loretta says, he was allegedly attacked by his 15-year-old female cousin.
A video shared with this publication shows the girl physically confronting Loven.
Loretta recounted that after the incident, her son returned home and described what had happened. She also noted that there had been several prior altercations between Loven and the girl.
The heartbroken mother of three said she initially took Loven to the Port Mourant Public Hospital for treatment. When his pain persisted, he was admitted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Loven, a student at Kildonan Primary School, was placed in the Intensive Care Unit, where his condition deteriorated, and he began vomiting blood. Tragically, he passed away on November 22.
“Honestly, when people lash he, he don’t take no last,” Loretta said, recalling her son’s gentle nature.
A postmortem conducted on Monday confirmed that Loven died from shock and hemorrhage caused by a ruptured spleen.
“I need justice. I only have two children left, a girl and a boy. And yesterday she [the suspect] turned to my son and said he left to get what his brother got. As a parent, I feel scared to send my children out to shop or play because she is not a good person to be around,” she said.
Loretta added, “I feel so sad because anything you asked Loven to do, he would try, even if he said he wasn’t going to.”
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
