Chef fined $20k for importing 10 dogs without permit at Region Nine checkpoint

A 40-year-old Georgetown chef was on Monday fined after admitting that she illegally imported ten dogs into the country without the required permit.

Elizabeth Chung, known as “Liza,” of Albertown and Alexander Village, Georgetown, was arrested on 22 November at the Bina Hill Police Checkpoint in Region Nine after officials discovered the animals in her possession.

Police said Chung failed to present a valid import permit, a requirement under Section 22(1) and Section 40(1)(a) of the Animal Health Act No. 7 of 2011, which governs the movement of terrestrial animals into Guyana.

She was subsequently charged and taken before His Worship Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday. When the charge was read, Chung pleaded guilty and was fined $20,000.
