Entries have officially closed for the fourth running of the Mouttet Mile, now the richest race in the Caribbean with a staggering US$300,000 purse.
The final field of 15 has been declared for the December 6 event, and what has emerged is not only the deepest line-up in the race’s history, but one of the strongest Grade 1 fields ever assembled at Caymanas Park.
This year brings a powerful regional flavour, with Guyana making its biggest-ever impact on Jamaican racing through the One Guyana Racing Stable, while the entry roster also welcomes a legendary Hall of Fame jockey from the United States setting the stage for a historic showdown.
One Guyana Racing Stable makes its mark (Nautical Star takes aim at glory)
Guyana’s rising powerhouse, One Guyana Racing Stable, has officially secured its place in the Mouttet Mile with its American-bred contender Nautical Star.
Imported from the world-renowned yard of Champion Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., the horse brings a wealth of U.S. graded-level conditioning and arrives in Jamaica as one of the most respected newcomers in the field.
The Jockey: A Top Local Talent
Nautical Star will be piloted by leading Jamaican jockey Reyan ‘Raddo’ Roman, one of the country’s most consistent and tactical riders. Roman has built a reputation for exceptional timing, strong pace judgment and the ability to get the best out of imported American horses.
His partnership with top-tier trainers such as Nunes, Subratie, and Feanny has cemented him as a rider capable of winning any Grade 1 event at Caymanas Park.
For One Guyana, he brings exactly what is needed: cool nerves, big-race experience, and a deep understanding of the mile trip.
The Trainer: Anthony ‘Baba’ Nunes
Hall of Fame conditioner Anthony Nunes, one of Jamaica’s most accomplished and respected trainers, takes charge of Nautical Star’s preparation.
Nunes has captured multiple trainer’s titles and is known for producing polished, peak-condition athletes that deliver their best on major race days.
His training programme has already shown its effectiveness with Nautical Star’s steady improvement since arriving from quarantine making the colt a legitimate threat to the established local stars.
ANOTHER GUYANESE ENTRY: Colin Elcock sends Unspun
Guyanese owner Colin Elcock adds even more regional pride with the entry of Unspun, last year’s Champion Two-Year-Old in Jamaica.
The talented colt has consistently shown class and resilience, placing strongly behind top horses such as Mojito throughout the season.
He will be partnered by a visiting Trinidadian jockey, adding a second layer of international intrigue from the southern Caribbean. With powerful juvenile credentials and consistent Three-Year-Old form, Unspun is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the early pace of the race.
A HALL OF FAME JOCKEY ENTERS THE ARENA (Javier Castellano joins the Mouttet Mile Field)
In the biggest shockwave of the week, the entry board confirmed that world-famous U.S. jockey Javier Castellano winner of the 2023 Kentucky Derby, Preakness, multiple Breeders’ Cup races, and over 5,700 career victories will compete in the Mouttet Mile.
Castellano, riding Rideallday for the legendary Philip Feanny, instantly elevates the race’s international profile. His presence signals that the Mouttet Mile has officially become a destination event for elite global riders.
For many fans, the storyline is irresistible: The world-famous U.S. superstar versus the rising Caribbean powerhouse One Guyana Racing Stable.
This clash of continents, the Hall of Fame American jockey versus the Guyanese challengers adds a dramatic narrative that Jamaican racing has never seen before.
