Team Guyana has established a firm grip on the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) athletics competition after a commanding day one performance, sweeping the majority of the track events despite torrential rain at the National Track and Field Facility, West Coast Demerara.
The host nation’s athletes consistently delivered one-two finishes, leaving rivals Suriname and French Guiana struggling to keep pace.
The short sprints proved to be a lucrative haul for Guyana, establishing the theme of local dominance early on.
In the Boys’ 100m dash, Guyana secured gold and silver as Ezekiel Millington powered through the track in 10.80 seconds, ahead of teammate Dequan Farrell (10.88s). Nathan Noyon (11.10s) secured the bronze medal for French Guiana.
The Girls’ 100m delivered an identical result, with Quinyla Burnette taking gold (12.30s) and Nyah Gravesande claiming silver (12.40s).
Jozuana Dawane (12.60s) of French Guiana finished third.
The standout performance of the day came from Tianna Springer, the CARIFTA champion, who obliterated the field in the Girls’ 400m.
Despite the pouring rain, Springer crossed the line in 57.40 seconds, a full six seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

Teammate Joanna Anthon (1:03.80s) took silver, followed by French Guiana’s Chelsey Ismeus (1:06.80s) for bronze.
In the Boys’ 400m, Tishawn Easton (49.07s) and Ade Sealey (49.81s) ensured yet another one-two finish for the hosts, with Gjord Aloeboetoe (54.10s) securing a rare track medal for Suriname.
Guyana maintained its strong momentum in the middle and long-distance races as Gold medals were sealed for Guyana by Adanya Glen (5:19.90s) and Ebo McNeil (4:12.00s) in the 1500m races, while Esther McKinnon delivered a dramatic finish in the girls’ 3000m race, holding off French Guiana’s Clara Delpey (11:10.00s) to win gold in 11:09.50s.
The host nation capped its domination of the track programme by securing victories in both the Boys’ and Girls’ 4x400m relays.
While Guyana dominated the track, the field events saw more competitive results shared amongst the nations.
French Guiana found success in the women’s jumping events: Melinae Dufay claimed gold in the Girls’ High Jump (1.45m) and Janaika Ringuet won the Girls’ Triple Jump with a leap of 11.03m.
However, Guyana immediately responded in the men’s category, with Courtney Haynes soaring to victory in the Boys’ High Jump (1.90m) and Duel Europe claiming the Triple Jump gold (14.37m).
Guyana’s Beyonce Chandler was the star of the women’s throws, winning gold in both the Discus (28.06m) and the Shot Put (9.59m).
The athletics programme is scheduled to conclude on Saturday.
