Six-hour interruption for G/Town on Saturday as power outage scheduled

Residents across multiple Georgetown communities will face a scheduled electricity interruption on Saturday, December 6, as the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) undertakes critical maintenance and upgrades to support the new Gas-to-Energy Project and enhance overall grid reliability.

The planned outage will occur from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., affecting homes and businesses in the following areas: South & North Ruimveldt, Tucville, Lamaha Park & Springs, Guyhoc Park & Gardens, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Shirley Field Ridley Square, Cane View Avenue, Industrial Estate & Industrial Site to Agricola, Republic Park & Gardens, Nandy Park, Continental Park, Anaida Avenue, and Ubani Avenue in Eccles.

Additionally, customers in South Georgetown and along the East Bank to Eccles can expect brief outages during the start of works (5:00–6:00 a.m.) and again during restoration switching (11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.).

Scope of Works

L10 Transmission Line Diversion

  • The aerial fibre-optic cable will be transferred to new structures to enable the L10 line diversion from Goedverwagting to Sophia Substation.

  • L10 structures will be repositioned to support the 69kV double circuit line interconnecting the Gas-to-Energy project from Goedverwagting to Sophia Substation.

System Reliability and Maintenance

  • Transmission line from the power ship to New Georgetown Substation: Maintenance will address hot spot issues identified through thermal imaging.

  • New Georgetown Substation: Teams will conduct testing and commissioning of a new mobile substation and perform maintenance on equipment, including circuit breakers and transformers.

These critical activities aim to improve network stability, reduce the risk of power disruptions during the holiday season, and prepare the grid for future integration of the Gas-to-Energy Project.

GPL apologises for the inconvenience and assures the public that all work will be completed within the scheduled timeframe. Updates on progress will be shared on GPL’s social media platforms.
