West Berbice man convicted of mother’s murder

A West Coast Berbice man has been convicted of murdering his mother in an incident that occurred in 2021.

Deonarine Dookhoo, also known as Dinesh, appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Berbice High Court.

It was alleged that Dookhoo killed his mother, Teshwattie Jaglall, affectionately known as Babo, between 30 June and 1 July 2021 at her home at Lot 4, Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice.

During the trial, several witnesses, including police officers, gave evidence relating to the day her body was discovered.

At the time of the incident, Dookhoo and his two children were living with Jaglall.

Reports indicated that Dookhoo had a history of alcohol use and would become irritated when his mother confronted him about his drinking. On the night before the incident, after consuming alcohol, he allegedly assaulted her when she attempted to reprimand him.

Evidence suggested that Dookhoo attacked his mother with a cutlass, resulting in her death.

A 12-member jury heard testimonies from multiple witnesses.

After the evidence was presented, Justice Kissoon set 6 January 2026 for sentencing, during which Dookhoo is expected to receive a lengthy prison term.

Cicela Corbin is representing the state, while attorney Suriya Sabsook is representing Dookhoo.
