Over $130 million in cash, gold seized after SOCU operation in Bartica

The Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) has reported that it seized over $130 million in cash and gold stemming from the attempted purchase of undeclared gold. The seizure was made during an operation in Bartica, Region Seven.

According to a SOCU press release, a joint intelligence operation was conducted at different locations in Bartica on Tuesday.

This operation resulted in the seizure of over $32 million in cash and over $100 million in gold stemming from the attempted purchase of undeclared gold.

During the operation, SOCU arrested Eon Ricardo Ferrier, also known as Blacks, Munesh Chatterpaul, and Latchman Malloo. The men are currently cooperating with ongoing investigations into gold smuggling and money laundering.

“These persons have been under surveillance for an extended period by both local and international partners, and are suspected to have extensive connections in illicit gold trading and with seeming links to the Mohameds being financed and purchasing on their behalf,” SOCU said in the release.
