Salary increases, direct support & tax relief part of govt’s ‘strategic vision’ – Jagdeo

A day after President Irfaan Ali outlined his government’s plan for national development over the next five years, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo assured Guyanese that several measures to support them will be rolled out.

At his press conference held on Thursday at the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s headquarters, Jagdeo explained that the government’s “strategic vision” for prosperity includes economic diversification, job creation, and income generation.

Beyond that, he assured citizens that the government is conscious of the vulnerable groups that require extra support.

“We want them, through direct interventions, to become prosperous in our country, wherever they live,” the Vice President said, noting that the government will focus heavily on rural and hinterland development.

For the country’s workers, the Vice President said the government will continuously make provisions for salary increases. He reminded the public that an 8% salary increase was given this year following talks with the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU).

Cash grants, too, he said, will be distributed by the government, but explained that those payouts are only a small part of the administration’s plan to support people.

On Wednesday, President Ali announced that provisions for a $100,000 cash grant for every Guyanese adult will be included in Budget 2025. The budget is expected to be presented in January 2026.
