Vendors around GPHC to be placed at nearby parking lot

Vendors along New Market Street and in the vicinity of the Georgetown Public Hospital, will be moved to a nearby parking lot, Town Clerk Candace Nelson has said.

On Monday, Nelson received a lawyer’s letter indicating that if the vendors do not vacate the area within three days, the hospital’s lawyer will seek a mandamus from the court.

Speaking with the News Room on Thursday, Nelson said the decision to relocate the vendors was made after consultations.

“We went out there to access the situation and we decided that we are going to move the vendors who are still plying their trade through New Market Street to East Street where the parking lot is,” Nelson said.

This is to ensure that these persons will not have reason to return to the area. She explained that there are caravans left unattended at the parking lot and the City Engineer, Colvern Venture was tasked with providing the notice for the owners to remove them if they are not utilizing them.

“If they don’t remove it, the council will remove them and the vendors will subsequently be placed there,” she said.

Nelson said the vendors were consulted and made aware of the plan and have agreed to remove from there, shifting further East on New Market Street away from the entrance to the hospital.

The caravan owners will be given one week to remove them while the vendors commence relocation. Nelson said within two weeks each vendor should be removed.
