The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has joined the national sporting community in mourning the loss of Gregory ‘Chassis’ Cort, a titan of grassroots boxing who passed away on Friday at the age of 63.
Cort, the long-standing head coach of the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym, was widely regarded as the primary architect of the sport’s resurgence in Berbice.
In a moving tribute, GBA President Steve Ninvalle described Cort as more than just a trainer, calling him a “passionate servant” whose commitment to the sweet science in Guyana was unmatched.
Under Cort’s watchful eye, boxing in Berbice underwent a renaissance. He was renowned for his ability to identify raw potential in the streets of Rose Hall and transform it into regional excellence.
His gym became a factory for talent, producing a conveyor belt of fighters who represented the “Golden Arrowhead” with distinction across the Caribbean.
“Gregory Cort was more than just a coach; he was the heartbeat of boxing in Berbice,” Ninvalle stated.
“His passion for the sport, his commitment to young athletes, and his belief in what boxing could do for lives and communities were unmatched. He has left a void that will be extremely hard to fill.”
Ninvalle emphasised that Cort’s influence was not measured solely by championship belts. He was a mentor and a father figure to countless young men, using the discipline of the ring to build character and provide a sense of purpose to those under his charge.
“His contribution went beyond medals and titles,” the GBA President noted. “His legacy will live on through the fighters he developed and the standard he set. He gave selflessly to the sport he loved.”
The GBA has expressed its deepest condolences to his family, the Rose Hall Jammers gym, and the wider Berbice community.
