Tragedy struck on Sunday night along the Number 36 Public Road, Corentyne, when a young man lost his life in a car accident.
The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Lakhram Etwaroo, a construction worker of Number 35 Village.
Speaking with News Room, Derick Doodnauth, a resident of Number 36 Village, said that at about 23:00 hrs he was at home when he heard a loud impact. Upon rushing outside, he discovered that a car had collided with his parked vehicle on a bridge.
Doodnauth explained that the vehicle involved in the crash overturned after the impact. According to Doodnauth, Etwaroo was a passenger in the car; however, relatives of the deceased have disputed this claim.
According to reports, the vehicle was allegedly racing another car when the driver lost control, resulting in the collision with the parked vehicle.
Etwaroo’s cousin, Sarika Sansarran, said that he had just left a birthday party in Phillipi Village and was on his way to drop off a friend in Bengal Village when the accident occurred. She further asserted that Etwaroo was, in fact, the driver of the car, which reportedly belonged to the other individual involved in the accident.
Etwaroo was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
