A significant reshaping of Guyana’s regional population map has emerged from the preliminary report of the 2022 National Population and Housing Census, with Region Six (East Berbice–Corentyne) becoming the country’s third most populous administrative region, overtaking Region Ten and underscoring shifting settlement and growth patterns across the country.
The preliminary findings were formally presented to the public on Monday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
Delivering the presentation, Deputy Chief Statistician and Deputy Census Officer Vanessa Profitt revealed that Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) remains Guyana’s most densely populated region, with its population increasing from 311,563 in 2012 to 349,559 in 2022.
Region Three (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara) has consolidated its position as the second most populous region, recording growth from 107,785 to 143,884 over the same period.
The most notable change, however, occurred in Region Six, whose population rose from 109,652 in 2012 to 114,574 in 2022, pushing it into third place nationally for the first time and reflecting sustained demographic growth along the Corentyne corridor.
Beyond the coastal belt, every administrative region recorded population increases between 2012 and 2022, including hinterland regions traditionally characterised by slower growth. Region Seven posted modest but steady gains, while Regions One and Nine also expanded despite their vast geographic size and relatively low population bases.
Nationally, population density increased from 3.5 persons per square kilometre in 2012 to 4.1 in 2022. Region Four, though the smallest by land area, remains the most crowded, with a density of 155.8 persons per square kilometre. By contrast, Region Nine, the largest geographically, saw only a marginal rise in density, from 0.4 to 0.5 persons per square kilometre.
