Taxi driver in critical condition after shot while driving

A 31-year-old taxi driver is in critical condition after he was shot to his head on Monday night along the East Coast of Demerara.

Police reported that the incident occurred around 23:45 hrs at Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD), in the vicinity of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Region Four.

The injured man, a resident of Annandale West, ECD, was reportedly driving west along the public road in a motor car with another male when they were allegedly pursued by several motorcyclists.

According to preliminary investigations, a loud sound was heard and the right-side glass of the car shattered. The driver reportedly lost consciousness shortly after, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and collide with a metal rail.

The victim was subsequently rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The car involved has since been examined by investigators and lodged as part of the ongoing probe. Police also canvassed the area for CCTV footage, which has been extracted, and several individuals have been contacted and questioned.

No arrests have been made so far, but police say they are pursuing several leads as investigations continue.
