Education Minister urges contractors to increase work hours, manpower to meet deadlines

Education Minister Sonia Parag has implored contractors involved in the construction of schools to adopt new strategies to meet respective deadlines.

During her appearance on the Starting Point Podcast on Friday, Minister Parag said this is part of the zero-tolerance approach being adopted to get infrastructure projects completed in a timely manner.

This strict approach is due to an influx of extension requests and slow completion of projects, stalling the students’ ability to be comfortably taught at schools.

“I’ve made it clear that if you are lagging behind and an extension has been granted, we are not looking to grant another extension. We’re actually looking to put measures in place to ensure that you complete it within a timely manner within that extension because we have children who are waiting to benefit from that,” she said.

Already, Parag said, a contractor at Region One was told that his team must increase their manpower and the working hours to get the project completed.

Currently, the ministry has some 600 projects ongoing but some of them are lagging behind. Parag said she has engaged several contractors and based on the case by case situations, legal recourse may be sought if necessary.

“We are taking a zero-tolerance approach and we are taking it case by case. Some of the delays will be caused by factors that are out of the control of the contractor,” she said.
