Barakat Landing fatality: DPP orders inquest into death of pork-knocker

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered that an inquest be held into the death of 27-year-old Matthew Ramlochand.

Ramlochand, a Pork-Knocker of the Soesdyke–Linden Highway, died on January 11, following a stabbing incident at Barakat Landing, Cuyuni River.

Investigations had led to the arrest of a 38-year-old male gold miner of Half Mile, Wismar, Linden on Friday, January 16, 2026, in connection with the matter. Following the completion of investigations, a file was prepared and submitted to the DPP’s Chambers for legal advice.

Police Headquarters, in a statement, said advice was received from the DPP’s Chambers directing that an inquest be conducted into the death. An inquest is a judicial inquiry, often used to determine the cause of an individual’s death.

Investigations continue.
