Guyana remains safe, secure — Todd

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, on Thursday reiterated that Guyana remains safe, stable and attractive for investment, as the Government continues to actively engage with global partners to protect the country and its people amid the recent events in Venezuela.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, Todd said President Irfaan Ali has consistently prioritised national security and the protection of Guyana’s resources, ensuring that citizens can go about their daily lives with confidence.

“The President has spoken extensively on ensuring that we protect the people of Guyana, to ensure our resources are protected, and to ensure that everyone can go to bed at night feeling safe.

“I think we have achieved that, and we want to maintain that,” Todd said.

He emphasised that President Ali remains actively engaged with international partners and is exploring every available option to ensure Guyana’s continued safety and stability.

When asked whether investors should be concerned about the regional climate, Todd dismissed such notions, stating that there are no signs of investor unease.

“I don’t recall that investors were worried. I have not seen the indicators on that. “What I know is that Guyana is a very attractive destination for investment. The investment climate in Guyana is very good, and we are carrying on with the business of governing this country,” he said.

Todd also underscored Guyana’s commitment to peace, noting that President Ali has consistently advocated for the region to remain a zone of stability.

“The President has always ensured in his discussions that this zone that we live in remains a zone of peace, and he has done everything in his power to ensure that peace and stability are maintained,” Todd said.

There has been a shift in Venezuela’s political landscape following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, who is no longer in Venezuela and is facing criminal charges in the United States. For its part, Guyana has called for the region to remain a zone of peace but President Ali has affirmed that drug traffickers and gangs must not be allowed to harm societies. Additionally, Guyana has maintained that its approach to the border controversy with Venezuela remains grounded in diplomacy and international law.
