‘This is something we really wanted to be part of’- MACORP embraces Tertiary Football tournament

Nadia De Abreu, the Marketing and Communications Manager at Machinery Corporation of Guyana (MACORP), was forthright about her company’s alliance with the Petra Organisation ahead of the first-ever Tertiary Education Football tournament, set to kick off next month.

“This is something we really wanted to be part of,” she emphatically stated on Thursday as officials of the two entities gathered at MACORP Head Office at Providence for a media engagement.

MACORP, the sole Authorised Caterpillar Dealer in Guyana for more than 25 years, has extended its benevolence to the sport, injecting G$600,000 into the one-month tournament, slated for February 8 to March 8.

“We are very pleased, happy and proud to be part of this inaugural tournament,” De Abreu commented.

“Last year, the team (Petra) came to us with a very strong proposal and they have been persistent since then- they didn’t give up- and this year we looked at it.”

With student-athletes from 14 tertiary institutions set to vie for top honours, it provides an excellent opportunity for MACORP to further connect with these learning institutions for mutually beneficial partnerships.

Just this week, De Abreu highlighted, a sister company of MACORP in Berbice opened its first Digital Seal Making Machine and a quartet of machinists that led the process were from New Amsterdam Technical Institute, one of the competing institutions in the tournament.

“So it’s good for us and it just reinforces what we’re doing. These are the people we want to target and tournaments like these are not just exciting, but they bring discipline, promote teamwork and they work towards a goal of winning. Those are the same principles that guide us in our everyday life and MACORP as a company.”

Finance and Administrative Director of MACORP Totaram Sooknanan posited that an investment in sport is a step in the right direction.

“As a company we want to show that we care, not just about profits, but also the community in which we work and serve,” Sooknanan related.

“Today is just a small gesture we hope will go a far way in developing team spirit, and keep the youth actively involved.”

Co-Director of the Petra Organisation Troy Mendonca said MACORP’s sponsorship would be utilised to offset expenses related to the tournament.

“We see it as an investment, given the plans we have for this tournament.”

Troy Peters of the Petra Organisation was high in praise for MACORP’s long-standing contribution to the technical field and the company’s benevolence to ‘The Beautiful Game.’

“They have had ongoing programmes from which many have benefitted, including football players. I’m confident that many of the players who would be taking part in tournament can look forward to employment at MACORP.”

Meanwhile, giving an overview of the tournament, Mendonca indicated that two teams will be matched against each other to play in a home and away format.

The top seven teams after this phase will advance to the quarter-finals, with the eighth team being the “best” among the remaining seven.

“Of course the stats will decide that (the eighth team),” Mendonca assured.

The champion team is guaranteed G$300,000, runner-up G$200,000, third G$100,000 and fourth G$50,000.

Teams confirmed for the tournament are:

  • University of Guyana Turkeyen
