A state-of-the-art abattoir in Onverwagt, Region Five, is preparing to open its doors to small butchers as it nears its official launch.
During a visit to the facility on Saturday, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said small butchers will have the opportunity to slaughter their animals at the facility at a cost of no less than $3,000.
He said the construction was completed in early 2025 with several tests currently being conducted. It was revealed that plans are in motion for an official commissioning ceremony led by President Irfaan Ali.
The Minister emphasised that the facility meets all food safety and international standards, ensuring a high-quality operation.
Training for staff members has commenced to equip them with the skills required to manage the facility effectively. “We are ensuring that we have a state-of-the-art Abattoir that we can also export meat,” he said.
Additionally, Minister Mustapha noted that animals are already on-site and will be processed soon. The project is financed by the Government of Guyana through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
