BUDGET 2026: $7.5 billion to support Indigenous communities

From land titling projects to scholarships for Indigenous youth, the government has allocated $7.5 billion for Amerindian communities in Budget 2026.

This was announced by Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh on Monday as he presented Guyana’s 2026 National Budget.

He said $400 million will be spent on the Amerindian Land Titling project, an initiative that has been ongoing for years and gives legal recognition of land ownership to Indigenous communities.

Additionally, $5 billion will be given to communities under the Amerindian Development Fund and through Presidential Grants to support economic ventures and the expansion of community services.

Another $1.9 billion will be spent on the Community Service Officers (CSO) programme. This initiative is one that intends to empower Amerindian youth in remote/riverain communities; it offers paid apprenticeships and training. Last year, Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali said the minimum wage through this programme would be $50,000 per person.

Beyond the CSO programme, $133.8 million will be spent on the hinterland scholarship programme for about 800 students to benefit.
