In a major boost to home ownership and community development, the Government has announced plans to construct 8,000 new homes and allocate 15,000 house lots across Guyana in 2026.
The initiative, backed by a $159.1 billion budget for housing, forms part of the Government’s ongoing push to address the housing backlog and provide modern, accessible homes for citizens across all income categories. Areas slated for development include Moleson Creek, Providence, Overwinning, Better Hope, Montrose, Vryheid’s Lust, Groenveldt, Leonora, and more, with house lots being distributed in locations such as Moleson Creek, Providence, Vryheid’s Lust, Leonora, and Charity.
In addition to new construction, the Government will issue over 7,000 land titles and transports, providing homeowners with formal property ownership and access to mortgage financing. Infrastructure upgrades are also planned, including the construction of concrete interlock drains with an $8 billion budget, street lighting in main access roads, development of recreational facilities, and the creation of mini-industrial areas to reduce noise and pollution in residential zones.
The Silica City project, a flagship housing development, will continue in 2026, building on last year’s progress of over 200 residential units, including 100 homes for young professionals, alongside supporting infrastructure.
Housing Minister [Insert Name] emphasised that these initiatives reflect the Government’s commitment to not only provide homes but also create comfortable, sustainable communities for all Guyanese.
Access to safe, clean water and effective waste management also remain top priorities for Guyana in 2026, with a combined $29.2 billion allocated to advance potable water, sanitation, and solid waste initiatives.
Government plans to expand access to potable water for over 118,000 residents through new wells and upgraded distribution systems in areas including Westminster, Yarrowkabra, No. 56 Village, Port Kaituma, Mabaruma, and Mahdia. Coastal and urban communities will benefit from continued upgrades to surface water treatment plants, including new facilities at Hope, Diamond, and the Shelterbelt, improving service for over 130,000 residents, supported by $8.2 billion in funding.
In the hinterland, solar-powered systems and water treatment upgrades will ensure reliable and safe water supply while enhancing operational efficiency. Complementing these interventions, Government will strengthen sanitation and solid waste management by constructing new landfill sites, improving collection and disposal, deploying compactor trucks and bins, and advancing a national waste recycling programme in locations including Zorg-En-Vlygt, Laurentia Catherina, Lusignan, and Bon Success.
