The government is focused on the continued modernisation of the Guyana Police Force, according to Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, who announced on Monday that $36.2 billion will be spent to support crime-fighting activities across the country.
A major allocation—$5 billion— will go towards the ‘Safe Country’ initiative, an investigative tool that involves video surveillance in priority areas. Just weeks ago, Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali hailed this programme, noting that it helped with the prevention of much crime in the capital city during the busy Christmas season.
Additionally, $900 million has been allocated to expand the Force’s transport capabilities. Dr. Singh said this investment is part of plans to expand the Police’s presence within all communities and eventually roll out an automated fleet management system to respond more efficiently to complaints. Nearly $250 million will also go towards community policing efforts.
Meanwhile, a total of $6 billion will go towards the Guyana Prison Service and another $6.3 billion is for the Guyana Fire Service. In both instances, significant sums will go towards improving facilities.
Overall, $100.3 billion is for the security sector.
