Grove youth identified as victim in Demerara River Bridge accident

Scott Dorwart has been identified as the person who lost his life in a major accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge on Thursday morning.

Dorwart, a taxi driver from Grove, East Bank Demerara was employed with Safe and Reliable Cabs, where he worked for approximately one year. The company has expressed condolences to his family and friends.

According to preliminary reports, the accident involved a truck that suffered a mechanical failure while on the bridge. The truck reportedly rolled downhill, crashing into several other vehicles. Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh confirmed that six vehicles were involved in the incident. Several others were also injured in the accident.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Fire Service stated that firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) responded to the scene shortly after the accident occurred.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic extrication tools to cut open a vehicle and rescue a critically injured individual who was trapped.

The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the bridge. Although the vehicles involved have since been removed, police ranks remain on the scene managing traffic and continuing investigations into the incident.
