A truck driver has said that a mechanical failure on the vehicle caused the major Thursday morning accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
Speaking with reporters at the scene, the driver explained that the truck began experiencing gearbox issues. The situation worsened as the brakes seemingly failed, causing the vehicle to roll backward, onto incoming traffic.
“The brakes didn’t holding back no more and the truck now start run down. I tried brace the rail but I couldn’t,” the driver said. He recalled that the steering also became “stiff, stiff” and despite his efforts, he was unable to avoid colliding with other vehicles.
An eyewitness recounted that the truck first hit a minibus.
“I see he lash the bus first and I say something wrong here. I pulled in the corner and jumped the barrier,” the eyewitness said.
Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh later confirmed reports of the accident, which resulted in several injuries and damage to multiple vehicles.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. This is a developing story, and further details will be provided in a subsequent report.
