Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill shared his belief that the truck involved in the fatal multi-vehicular accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge was defective.
He also said a team, including three engineers and a mechanic, will inspect the truck and ascertain what went wrong.
“They will write a report that will be signed, and it will become official evidence, but it is clear that the truck was defective,” Edghill said in a Facebook live, emphasising that the bridge remains safe for use.
Earlier, the ministry had confirmed that the truck was not overweight. At the scene, the driver told reporters that the truck underwent some mechanical failure while ascending the bridge; it was carrying cement.
The truck driver and owner have since been arrested as investigations into the matter continue. They are scheduled to appear in Court sometime Friday.
Meanwhile, Edghill said those individuals will also pay for damage to the bridge.
