Crediting her remarkable longevity to her unwavering faith in God, Beatrice Elizabeth Johnson, affectionately known as “Cousin Vye”, celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, surrounded by her family.
Born on February 16, 1926, at Lot 20 Litchfield Village, West Coast Berbice, Johnson shared that she always believed she would live to see a century.
After attending school in her community, Johnson went on to become a skilled beautician and seamstress. She later met and married her husband, now deceased, and together they built a loving and stable home for their seven children. Though four of their children have since passed away, their legacy continues through a large family.
Today, Johnson is the proud matriarch of 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Over the years, she resided in Mackenzie, Linden, Region 10, before eventually moving to the United States. Despite the many changes throughout her life, her faith has remained constant. A devoted member of the St. Jude Anglican Church, Johnson firmly believes that her trust in God has been the secret to her long life.
“I believe in God. Trust God for everything; always holding on to Him. Whatever I think, I thank God’s way and that’s my secret for living this long,” she said.
Even at 100, Johnson maintains a simple daily routine. She enjoys biscuits for breakfast and later has soup, mashed potatoes, and other home-cooked meals. Although she experiences some hearing challenges and arthritis, she remains active and continues to read her Bible, grateful that her eyesight is still strong.
Now lovingly cared for by family members Morna and Alicia, Johnson spends her days surrounded by affection and support. As she reflects on a century of life, she offers heartfelt advice to younger generations.
“Live for God and you will see everything; all your wishes will come true,” she encourages.
