New digital payment system coming — President Ali

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that a new digital payment system will be deployed soon, a venture expected to make monetary transactions more efficient.

The President spoke about the initiative on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of this year’s Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, hosted at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston.

Dr. Ali said the Bank of Guyana, which is the country’s central bank, has completed several necessary processes to make way for this new system. Two commercial banks are also ready to embrace this system now, he revealed too.

“We can now have digital wallets… digital payment platforms. That will be the new standard,” President Ali announced to rousing applause in the Marriott’s conference hall.

Last year, President Ali announced the government’s pursuit of this e-payment system. He also said it will able be able to make bill payments on the platform and that government ministries and agencies will also be linked for payment of services.
