Quick response by the Guyana Fire Service prevented a major fire from spreading at a multi-complex storage bond at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Chief Gregory Wickham told reporters at the scene that the Fire Service received a call at approximately 16:02 hrs and immediately dispatched five fire tenders.
“Generally, we were able to surround it and stop it from spreading. There was a catastrophe in waiting,” Wickham said, adding that the swift response prevented the fire from destroying the entire complex.
The building is owned by businessman, Rameez Mohamed.
Mohamed had earlier told the News Room that a loud explosion was heard inside the building moments before thick smoke was seen.
He later praised the Fire Service for its rapid response.
“If it wasn’t for them, this entire building would have burned down. They managed to reach here on time and control and contain the fire,” Mohamed said.
According to Wickham, the building accommodated multiple operations, including the manufacture of tables, windows and various hardware items.
“We would be carrying out investigations to determine what caused the fire,” Wickham said, noting that the blaze would have originated on the northern side of the building.
He explained that firefighters faced challenges accessing parts of the property as the business owner/s were not present at the time.
As a result, the Fire Service was forced to break into sections of the building to gain entry, while some areas were already open.
