Angel Manchan, a 16-year-old resident of Ruby Back Dam, East Bank Essequibo, has died following an accident involving a motorcycle and a minibus on Monday night.
According to a release from Police Headquarters, Manchan was riding motorcycle CR 487, allegedly at a fast rate, along the Barnwell Public Road. A 19-year-old pillion rider was also with Manchan.
At about 19:20 hrs, Police said, Machan reportedly collided with minibus BAG 2484, driven by a 58-year-old, which was proceeding in the opposite direction.
“The motorcyclist and pillion rider were reportedly not wearing safety helmets at the time.
“As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist and pillion rider were thrown from the motorcycle and landed in a yard on the southern side of the road, where they sustained injuries about their bodies,” Police said in the release.
Machan and the pillion rider were taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where the motorcyclist was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the pillion rider is receiving treatment in the emergency unit, and his condition is regarded as critical.
Manchan’s body was later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the driver of the minibus is in Police custody, assisting with investigations. Both vehicles have been lodged pending examination.
However, Police said a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the minibus, and no trace of alcohol was detected.
Investigations are ongoing.
