NATIONALS 2026: Onesi Dunn takes U-20 100m in epic photo-finish

Onesi Dunn claimed the blue-riband Under-20 100m title in a breathless photo-finish as the 2026 National Secondary Schools Championships got underway at the National Track and Field Facility on Wednesday.

In a race that lived up to its billing on the opening day at West Coast Demerara, the Chase’s Academic Foundation sprinter dug deep to clock 10.58 seconds, narrowly denying a surging field.

The margin of victory was razor-thin, with Dunn edging out Ezikel Millington of Mahaicony Secondary (10.61s) and Gordon Thompson of Mackenzie High (10.62s), while Skylar Charles finished a fraction behind in fourth at 10.63s.

While Dunn took the headlines in the boys’ senior category, Nyoscie Wright proved untouchable in the Girls’ U-20 final. Representing New Amsterdam Technical Institute, Wright powered home in 12.74s, finishing well clear of Leanna Fraser (13.30s) and Malia Primo (13.79s).

In the Under-17 ranks, Omari Welch produced a clinical performance to take gold in 10.93s, while Angel Jeffrey of Christianburg Wismar Secondary dominated the girls’ equivalent, clocking a sharp 12.05s.

The 1500m events provided some of the day’s most compelling narratives, none more so than the Boys’ U-17 final. Corey Speede of Tutorial High secured gold by the smallest of margins—just 0.01s—clocking 4:32.68 to beat Bryson McBean in a lung-busting sprint to the line.

At the Under-20 level, Ebo McNeil of Mackenzie High showed his class, dictating the pace to win in 4:17.36. He was followed by Jonathon Bristol (4:34.35) and Jamain Favourite (4:37.71).

The championships will continue Thursday and Friday, with each day scheduled to commence at 10:00h.
