A Grade Five pupil of a city primary school was, on Monday, found in possession of a licensed firearm that belongs to one of his relatives.
The incident occurred around 13:06 hrs Monday.
Information gathered by the News Room revealed that the pupil sought permission from a teacher to use the washroom. Shortly after, the News Room understands that the pupil returned with another teacher who reported that someone heard a “click” sound coming from under a desk.
When questioned, the pupil denied hearing anything. A search was conducted in his haversack and nothing was found. However, the situation escalated when another pupil discovered the firearm— a 9mm Taurus pistol— under the desk.
Police were immediately contacted and they took possession of the firearm which contained a magazine with eleven rounds of ammunition.
Investigations, the News Room was told, revealed that the weapon belongs to a relative of the student. The relative is a licensed firearm holder.
The relative confirmed that he discovered that the weapon had gone missing from his safe earlier in the day.
The gun was reportedly given to the child by his cousin that morning. The student reportedly wrapped the firearm, placed it in his haversack, and took it to school.
Investigations are ongoing.
