Youth employability and empowerment were at the forefront of Labour and Manpower Planning Minister Keoma Griffith’s weekend outreach in East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
During the engagement with residents of the community where he grew up, the Minister affirmed his ministry’s commitment to ensuring young people can access skills training and secure employment.
Saturday’s exercise was the first in a series of similar initiatives, he told residents.

“This is where it all started, right here at this shop. I lived here for a very long time. Traditionally this community has gone in one direction, but I’m hoping to bring valuable transformation that this community can see and appreciate,” Griffith said.
He explained that the facilities and support necessary to help residents become gainfully employed are available through the Ministry. The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) and the Manpower and Recruitment Agency, which provide skills training and job placement, were highlighted as key support systems.
“There is an entire department that just focuses on training young people and anybody in any aspect of work…we are going to find a way to train them, certify them, empower them and, at the next level, match them to somebody who can sharpen and even employ them,” Griffith noted.

Staff from the Legal and Occupational Health and Safety departments also joined the outreach. Additionally, residents were encouraged to use the online platform Jobs.gov.gy to submit their curriculum vitae (CV) for inclusion in the Ministry’s job bank.
Beyond skills training, the Minister said there are also opportunities for residents to develop their own businesses. Attendees were given the chance to raise concerns about security and social issues affecting the community.
