The FIBA 3×3 Commission has convened at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball (FIBA Headquarters), in Mies, Switzerland, for its fourth meeting of the 2023-2027 term, outlining a dynamic future for the sport following a successful 2025 season and setting the stage for upcoming milestones, including the LA2028 Olympic Games.
Chaired by Carmen Tocala, the meeting brought together commission members and FIBA leadership, including Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, to review progress and approve strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening 3×3 basketball globally.
A successful 2025 season recap
The commission reviewed a highly successful 2025 national team season, highlighted by the inaugural FIBA 3×3 Champions Cup in Bangkok and a record-breaking FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup in Singapore.
A landmark moment was the first-ever FIBA 3×3 World Cup hosted in Mongolia, which demonstrated the power of long-term planning and home-court advantage.
The Youth Nations League also saw record participation, with Oceania joining for the first time thanks to Olympic Solidarity funding.
Innovation on the Pro Circuits
The Men’s Pro Circuit in 2025 featured 17 World Tour events and 19 Challengers, with new teams breaking into the top ranks, proving the circuit’s permeability.
For the Women’s Series, the new “Invited Teams” concept was hailed a success, allowing committed national federations to enter a second team and increase player accessibility.
A collaboration with the All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN) has significantly boosted the series’ broadcast profile.
LA2028 Qualification Pathway Approved
A significant outcome of the meeting was the approval of the qualification system for the LA2028 Olympics, where the number of teams per gender will increase to 12.
The balanced pathway emphasises universality, rewards development in both genders, and offers multiple routes for national federations to qualify, including through ranking, Olympic Qualification Tournaments (OQTs), and specific National Team Cups.

Focus on Development and Integrity
The commission unanimously supported key regulatory changes to reinforce the sport’s integrity and reward long-term investment.
The Federation Ranking calculation will now consider a two-year period and include only Official and Recognised Competitions where FIBA can ensure full sport and data integrity. This change aims to benefit national federations committed to sustainable 3×3 development.
Development programmes were also highlighted, including pilot projects in Africa and Latin America to support team participation, plans for official FIBA 3×3 training hubs, and expanded e-learning resources for coaches and officials.
Looking Ahead
Updates were provided on the upcoming 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar and the ongoing efforts to potentially increase team quotas for future Olympics. Minor refinements to the Official 3×3 Basketball Rules, effective January 1, 2026, were also confirmed to improve game clarity and officiating.
“The continued growth and professionalisation of 3×3 basketball is FIBA’s clear focus,” said the Guyana Basketball Federation General Secretary Patrick Haynes.
Haynes, who is also a member of the FIBA 3×3 Commission, added, “The decisions taken today ensure we build on the momentum from Paris 2024 and create a robust, fair, and exciting pathway towards LA2028 and beyond.”
The meeting concluded with plans to continue supporting the global expansion and accessibility of 3×3 basketball.
The 3×3 Commission is responsible for the growth of the 3×3 discipline, the organisation and allocation of 3×3 competitions, and the regulation and officiating of the game.
It also oversees the development and interpretation of the FIBA 3×3 Basketball Rules, including drafting amendments for adoption by the Central Board.
