Two dead, one hospitalised after collision on Soesdyke-Linden Highway

An early morning accident on Thursday in the vicinity of Loo Creek on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway has claimed the lives of two people and left another seriously injured.

Dead are 54-year-old Da Tai Lei, a Chinese national, and Edward Singh, 87, both from Lethem, Rupununi.

The accident occurred around midnight Thursday.

Wen Wu Lei and Singh were passengers in pickup, PAE 6499, driven by 54-year-old Chinese national, Wen Wu Lei. He is seriously injured and remains hospitalised.

The other vehicles involved in the collision is motor lorry, GAH 5391, which was driven by 31-year-old Liston Marcus from Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters in a statement said investigations revealed that the lorry had been parked unattended on the western side of the highway at around 21:50 hrs on Wednesday after reportedly developing mechanical problems.

The vehicle, facing north, had no reflectors or warning devices to alert oncoming traffic, Police said.

Whilst traveling north at a high rate of speed, Police said the pickup collided with the rear of the lorry.

All three occupants of the pickup sustained injuries and were rescued by Police and citizens before being transported to the Linden Hospital Complex. Da Tai Lei and Singh were pronounced dead on arrival.

The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem examinations.

Police said the lorry driver is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
