Guyana gets two new pilot boats

The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) commissioned two new pilot boats, the Haiakwa and Haiama, on Friday.

The two vessels are worth approximately US$5 million. This move is aimed at strengthening the nation’s maritime capacity to meet the growing demands of the oil and gas industry.

According to a post from the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, subject minister Deodat Indar, emphasised that the expansion of the Maritime Administration Department’s (MARAD) fleet is crucial in Guyana’s quest to become a regional hub for shipping and trade. He also reportedly highlighted the need for more trained river pilots to support the growing maritime industry.
