Increased rape cases a concern in Reg. 10 – Commander

Police Commander of Region 10, Assistant Commissioner Kurleigh Simon said Police are concerned about the increased number of rape cases in Region 10.

During a recent episode of the ‘Police and You’ programme, Simon said that sexual offences, especially those against young girls and children, continue to be a major issue in the region.

Such offences, he said, are being seriously investigated by the Police.

“One of the areas with crime is the issue of rape — particularly those statutory rape cases where young females and children are affected,” Simon said.

Rape is deemed a serious crime by the Guyana Police Force.

It is defined by law as sexual intercourse with a person under the age of consent.

In response to the growing concern, Simon said Regional Division 10 will host a stakeholder forum this week aimed at tackling the problem through collaboration, education, and improved investigative support.

According to Simon, the forum will bring together key partners, including the Child Care and Protection Agency and Blossom Inc.

“We will be discussing ways and means in which we can address the issue in terms of assisting with our investigations and, more so, to educate young children on precautionary measures they can take to avoid becoming victims,” he said.

Simon emphasised that the forum will also focus on building stronger community awareness and ensuring that young people understand their rights and how to seek help when threatened or abused.
